Swords of this form were popular in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries centered around the Adriatic and the conflicts between the Venetian Empire and its Ottoman rival.
They are characterized by a relatively early example of the so-called "cat's head" pommel that graced so many schiavona and other Italian swords of the renaissance. A heavily S shaped guard and ribbed grip. The broad blade has a strong distal taper and a hexagonal cross section with a clipped point.
This sword style may well show the influence of the mercenaries and pirates that fought on both sides of this conflict both on land and at sea. This stout sword is a vicious cutter with the forward positioned center of gravity.
