This sword trainer has been developed for those who are interested in the use of the two handed sword in the Iberian traditions. Called the Montante, this style of two handed sword was considered an important and devastating weapon. The work of such fight masters as Diogo Gomes de Figueyredo describe its use in detail. It was also seen as the symbol of the fight masters of the day. The sword being depicted on their sparring jackets and illustrated in the manuals as a symbol of the accomplished fight master. It was also the piece they carried to control the combats in the salle and judge duels.
The use of this style sword is described in these manuals by specific tactical situations. These can be combined as needed to meet any demands but are as specific as how to take on many opponents in a variety of situations or how to guard and escort a lady through a hostile crowd.
To create a sword that handles like the originals used by the 17th C. combatants we based this trainer on an original sharp sword that is in a private collection in Spain. The work of Figueyredo has been recently translated and interpreted and the creation of these trainers was part of that process. This has highlighted what a great weapon this is and how devastating effective such a sword can be in battle.
